ECOLOGICALLY FOUNDED WILDFIRE MITIGATION, FORESTRY AND ARBOR CARE
In 2017, Steve Underwood started Underwood Forestry after a successful career with the U.S. Forest Service. As a Prescribed Fire and Fuels Specialist for the Bureau of Land Management, Steve was responsible for designing fuels projects and prescribed fires in two offices. While in Oregon, Steve burned an average of 20,000 to 25,000 acres a year.
Steve was the lead Burn Boss instructor in three different Forest Service regions of the U.S. While working in Klamath Falls Resource Area of the Bureau of Land Management, Steve was responsible for the implementation of 15,000–20,000 acres of prescribed fire per year. During that period, Steve was a Division Supervisor for the Pacific Northwest Team 2 Type One Fire Management Team. In that capacity, Steve was the primary prescribed fire leader on all large fires that the team managed. He was also the Fuels Management Specialist for the BLM in Billings for two years and designed the first prescribed fire project between Billings and Miles City in 2010, which significantly reduced the town of Roundup’s wildfire risk to the west of the town.
In addition, Steve designed and led riparian restoration projects in Billings, MT, for the BLM. He designed and participated in tamarisk and Russian olive removal in Canyonlands, Canyon de Chelly, and Arches National Parks. Steve is currently working with the Town of Mancos and private landowners to design a project to improve the habitat, fire resiliency, and recreation access on the Mancos River.
