Wildfire Mitigation

Wildfire mitigation my specialty as I designed wildfire mitigation projects for the United States Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and National Park Service as a primary part of my work as a federal fire manager.  My first project was in Yellowstone in 2000.  I was a Prescribed Fire and Fuels Specialist for the Bureau of Land Management in Klamath Falls, OR and Billings, MT and was responsible for designing fuels projects and prescribed fires in both offices.  I burned an average of 20,000 to 25,000 acres a year while in Oregon.  I designed the first prescribed fire project between Billings and Miles City in 2010.  This significantly reduced the town of Roundup’s wildfire risk to the west of the town.  ~Owner, Steve Underwood

Hazardous Tree Removal and  Arbor Care

Underwood Forestry is skilled at removing hazard trees that are near homes or other infrastructure.  We climb trees or use a bucket lift to safely take down trees.  We are insured.

See our photo gallery for examples of this type of tree removal.

We prune trees, cable them, and treat them for disease in an effort to promote their health.

Orchard Restoration and Fruit Tree Pruning

Underwood Forestry and Tree Service will prune your fruit trees.  We are skilled in bringing your older “backyard” trees back into production as well as maintaining orchards.

Prescribed Fire

Steve was the lead Burn Boss instructor in three different Forest Service regions of the US.  He was on the cadre of this class from 2000 until 2015.  While working in Klamath Falls Resource Area of the Bureau of Land Management, Steve was responsible for the implementation of 15,000 – 20,000 acres of prescribed fire per year.  During that period, Steve was a Division Supervisor for the Pacific Northwest Team 2 Type One fire management team.  In that capacity, Steve was the primary prescribed fire leader on all large fires that the team managed.  Steve was the Fuels Management Specialist for the BLM in Billings for two years and carried out the first large Rx Fire between Billings and Miles City next to the town of Roundup.

In the Four Corners area, Underwood Forestry is your go to team for implementing prescribed fire ranging from pile and field burning to broadcast fires over large acreage.

Steve is a certified Burn Boss with the State of Colorado.

Riparian Restoration

Steve designed and led riparian restoration projects in Billings, MT for the BLM.  He designed and participated in tamarisk and Russian olive removal in Canyonlands, Canyon de Chelly, and Arches National Parks.   A key part of riparian restoration is restoring rapids, riffles and pools in streams and rivers.  This promotes macro- and micro-invertebrate population growth which is frequently followed by increases in fish populations.  Steve is currently working with the Town of Mancos and private landowners to design a project to improve the habitat, fire resiliency, and recreation access on the Mancos River.

Ecological Restoration

Ecological restoration is the process of assisting the recovery of an ecosystem that has been degraded, damaged, or destroyed (Society for Ecological Restoration definition).  Underwood Forestry can be your contractor to bring about a restoration to the property that you care about.

Firewood

Underwood Forestry would like to become your firewood supplier.  We primarily sell ponderosa but can also provide aspen, oak, and hardwood of different varieties.  We sell a “phat” cord which is 1.1 to 1.2 cords in Steve “speak.”
